When All You Have is Your Cry
A reflection on Psalm 34:4–7
"I sought the Lord, and he answered me and rescued me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant with joy; their faces will never be ashamed. This poor man cried and the Lord heard him and saved him from all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and rescues them."
— Psalm 34:4–7
Reading these few verses overwhelms me. Not in a negative way, but in the best way. I'm overwhelmed that the Lord would answer my cry.
I Sought the Lord
It starts so simply: "I sought the Lord." I looked for Him. And when I did, He answered me and rescued me from my fears.
That order matters. Seeking comes first. When we seek His face, pray, and put our trust in Him, God gives us an inner joy and confidence that can never be put to shame.
Radiant Joy
Have you ever seen someone full of joy while their whole world seems to be falling apart? Not a fake smile or a "just stay positive" kind of happy, but a deep, steady joy that doesn't make sense on paper.
That kind of joy. That's the joy I want. And this verse tells us where it comes from: looking to Him.
This Poor Man Cried
My favorite part of this passage is this: "This poor man cried and the Lord heard him."
I often think about how insufficient I am. Honestly, I feel like a nobody. I don't have anything impressive to bring to God. All I really have to offer Him is my love.
And still, He cares so much about me.
He's there to help when I have nothing left and nothing to give. Not my best effort. Not my perfect prayers. Just my cry. And He hears it.
How powerful is that?
He Encamps Around Us
And then, after all of that, the psalm goes even further: the angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him.
He doesn't just hear us and leave. He surrounds us. He provides divine protection, comfort, and deliverance over our lives.
Seek Him Today
I don't know what you're facing today, friend. Maybe you're running on empty. Maybe you feel too small or too tired to even know how to pray.
Seek Him anyway. Bring Him your cry. He will answer you.
A Prayer
Lord, thank You that You hear me even when all I have is a cry. Thank You that I don't have to be enough, because You are. Help me to seek Your face first, and fill me with the kind of joy that holds steady when life doesn't. Surround me with Your protection and peace today. In Jesus' name, amen.
